Dr. Don S, Family Practice
Indio, CA, client since 2001I purchased my disability insurance in the 1960’s when I graduated from medical school and entered into private medical practice as a family practice physician. I realized the need to protect my ability to earn an income to cover my monthly living expenses for me and my wife and children, and I’m glad I did. Never thinking I would become disabled, In 1993 at the age 57 I was diagnosed with lumbar disc disease with spinal stenosis causing me a total disability. I was paid monthly disability benefits for 2 years by my insurance company until I agreed upon a buy-out from my claim. It was a great relief to me knowing money was coming in each month during my total disability to pay my monthly bills.

Dr. Steve M, Podiatrist
Los Angeles, CA, client since 1984When I started in my private medical practice in 1970, I was as nervous as you can imagine with a big bank loan, an office of newly purchased equipment, and a list of expenses before the first patient walked in the door. High on that list were insurance premiums, especially disability. When you are your only source of income, you need as much income protection as you can get. No one would ever think of becoming disabled, but in 1994 I acquired a disease called idiopathic peripheral neuropathy which left me unable to perform surgery or examine patients. Once it was determined that my disability was permanent and I was unable to perform the skills of my profession, my insurance company started paying me my monthly total disability benefits. The money they paid me every month from 1995 to 2008, when my benefit period ended at age 65, allowed me to pay my ongoing monthly bills. My disability insurance gave me the peace-of-mind and financial security to think about my future, avoid major depression and the need for therapy, which would have certainly followed. Besides, it protected me from having to sell my possessions or assets. An unforeseen and total disability changed my life overnight, but thanks to my foresight, it did not create a disaster and allowed me to have a future. Don’t gamble with your hard earned income. My advice to you, invest in yourself first. This policy was the best investment I ever made.
